Review featured in the Winsford Guardian August 2007

“NESTLED in the heart of the Cheshire countryside the Alvanley Arms provides the perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The first thing that hit us about this 16th century coaching inn in Cotebrook was the stunning hanging baskets and the blooming flowers awash with colour adorning the entire front of the building.

My companion and I visited the pub, which is adjacent to the Shire Horse Centre, on a busy Friday night and even though we had not booked the friendly staff could not have been more accommodating.

One thing that strikes you about this place is that it is quite clearly family-run, the atmosphere is homely and welcoming and the horse pictures and rosettes make for a really special touch.”

Review featured in Pure Cheshire September 2007

“Overall. A 16th Century coaching house pub restaurant with a good local reputation in a picturesque setting in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.

Style of décor. Quaint, rustic and historic with exposed beams and horse brasses.

Favourite dishes. So many to choose from on this extensive menu! Portions are generous and as well as the English staples, there are exotics like Thai Fishcakes. The prawn salad starter is quiet exceptional as was the home made vegetable soup the day I visited. Mains: cod in guiness batter, chips and mushy peas is excellent. The lamb shank with savoury mash served to my friend was quickly demolished accompanied by sounds of satisfaction. Desserts: we were too full to indulge from the long list but diners on the next table told us their homemade apple pie was “yummy”.

Value for money Good, especially for lunch.
Service Friendly and welcoming.
Who goes there? Locals and daytrippers.

AA 4 star rating

The AA have awarded us a 4 star rating for our accommodation which means “Attentive, more personalised service. Very good beds and high quality furniture. Breakfast offers a greater choice, and fresh ingredients are cooked and presented with a high level of care”

An AA inspector stays overnight as a mystery guest on a regular basis. Our latest visit summary was as follows:-

“ The Alvanley Arms presents well with grounds and gardens in colourful, tidy seasonal mode and continues to compete strongly within the current commercial climate. Hospitality is proprietor driven and the young staff are friendly and pro active creating an informal relaxed atmosphere. The accommodation is well coordinated and presents well with rooms being well equipped in anticipation of market needs. Dinner was freshly prepared and enjoyable and I am happy to recommend that an AA Dinner Award is now appropriate. Breakfast was freshly cooked and enjoyable. At the end of the day this is a well structured, established business which is moving comfortably forward within the parameters of modern day markets and I am happy to recommend that the current 4 star rating with an Inn designator remains appropriate at this stage.”
